What are Herniated/Bulging Discs?

The vertebrae in your spine are stacked one on top of the other. In between each vertebrae is a disc, which acts as a cushion to prevent bone on bone rubbing. The disc also absorbs the shock from sports, daily activities, and more.

In a herniated or bulging disc, the soft center of the disc is penetrated and begins to seep through the exterior of the disc. You may develop a herniated disc anywhere along the spine, from your neck all the way down to your lower back. While some patients have a bulging disc and do not know it, most patients feel painful symptoms when this happens.

Symptoms of a slipped disc include pain along the spine, pain that worsens when you make certain movements, pain that radiates into the limbs, muscle weakness, and a pins and needles feeling. If you experience these symptoms, visit our chiropractor to get checked out.

Common Causes of Herniated Disc

A herniated or bulging disc often occurs after injury or accidents, including sports accidents, workplace accidents, improper lifting, and auto accidents.

If you are overweight, you face increased risk of a herniated disc. If your job requires heavy lifting, you also face an increased risk of a bulging disc. While a healthy lifestyle can lower your likelihood of getting a herniated disc, you may be more likely to get a herniated disc if you live a sedentary lifestyle.

Age is a major contributor to bulging discs, since your discs naturally become more brittle as you get older.

How To Diagnose A Herniated Disc

We will take a history of your symptoms and perform a physical exam. We may place pressure on the back, look for areas of inflammation, test your muscle strength, and test your nerve functions. If we feel it's necessary, we may take x-rays.

See Our Chiropractor in Richmond for Herniated Disc Treatment

If you experience herniated disc symptoms, come to our chiropractic clinic. We'll diagnose the problem and determine a treatment plan that relieves your pain and reverses compression.

We use the spinal decompression method for herniated disc treatment. In this method, we place you on a decompression table, and then use two harnesses to secure you to the table. Using a programmable computer-aided traction system, we flex and decompress the spine. Treatments may feel a bit strange as the table moves, but they are not painful.

Over a series of treatment, your spine will lengthen and get more room in between discs. The treatment creates a vacuum, where the leaked gel is then sucked up into the disc, reversing the herniated disc. Treatment also nourishes your discs with spinal fluid, helping you feel better.

Our chiropractor in Richmond, VA offers drug-free herniated disc treatment. To discuss your symptoms with our chiropractor, reserve your appointment online or call us today at (804) 673-9355.
